  • Concerts!

Well done everyone on last week's concerts. Tuesday in the Cathedral was avery impressive display of our chamber music and solos; All very accomplished and Robin Kiel was very pleased with the first performance of his guitar quartet. The singers were in great voice on Friday- good to hear all the solos, and the choirs were in fine form too; Flood! happened (well done, Martin!) and will happen again when we have had some more rain (and rehearsal time). Thanks very much to Karen and her dancers too; they looked fantastic. I was most impressed by the Rock Group- they have made huge progress this year, and the energy and skill they showed on Saturday was fabulous. A bit loud for my old ears, but I enjoyed it nonetheless!

So well done everyone, and big thanks to all staff for their work, and especially to Hilary and her team for putting on the two performances in the Library Theatre.

We're glad to see John de Havilland mentioned in the Spring 2009 Bulletin from Awards for Young Musicians:

John, 13, saxophone, whose Award enabled him to be driven from Lincolnshire to attend Sheffield Music Academy every weekend.

"This award has changed my life. It has given me the opportunity every weekto attend the academy and concentrate on my diploma in composition.Without this award, I may not have been able to complete the year as the costof fuel needed for the miles covered would not have been possible."

  • Congratulations to Alys

Alys will join Tom Pickles, another of our founder members in the autumn at St Mary’s Music School in Edinburgh (where John was Director for ten years before coming to Sheffield).

St Mary’s is the smallest of the specialist residential schools, which also include Chetham’s in Manchester (where Na-Rae went from us two years ago) and the highly-prestigious Menuhin School in Surrey.

    Congratulations to Alys
